You can do that; It's called reactance anulling and is common practice on basshorns. But I didn't design the π midhorn that way - It's designed to have an open back. The π midhorn actually works well with any rear chamber larger than 0.5ft3. In practice, I don't like the rear chamber to be open because I don't want the rear wave to be presented to the room and interact in any way, so I like using the unused space in the midhorn cabinet as a rear chamber and filling it with absorbent material.
