Today was a lot of testing, and A/B listening tests between the conical and tractrix horns of mine.Fired up the conical, and took a few freq response measurements with SW. I had to add a filler block in front of the cone to displace ~30cm^2. Its +/- 3db from 500Hz to 1.6Khz. Not bad! Below 500, theres the dip and then the peak at the conical horns cutoff. The peak is actually flat with the rest of the response, but I'm crossing at 500Hz anyway to the 2225 for <500Hz, I think its better that way after analyizing the measurement graph of my horn.
So I went back to the old tractrix horns. Filler block I had before was only half the size of the one in the conical, so I took off that filler block and tried it on the conical, it did improve the HF response to about ~1.45KHz or so, response curve was a bit more "wobly" than the conical horn one, but it was OK, it went higher than I had it the last few months.
Time to see which one "sounded" better. I made another filler block so I didn't have to keep switching them out between the two. So listening and comparing the horns side-by-side.. they sound different. I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm not sure if I could say either is better over the other, but they are definitly different. They are also both definitly good, but in the end I am going to have to choose one of them. I think I'll give my ears a rest for a while, they've been quite "over-used" today! Maybe leave this for an hour or two, then I'll come back and do the A/B test again when my ears are thinking straight (or "listening" straight). I will post back here with my impressions later. Perhaps I should try and see which one blends better with the 2370/PA-D45 combo as well...
