The reason to go active is mostly for the amp, not the speakers. There are other things that come into play because of the reactive nature of the loudspeaker load, but the main thing is the bandwidth reduction of each amp. Reduced bandwidth helps keep 'em from clipping. The less you have HF modulated by LF, the more dynamic range you can get from the amp before hitting the power rails.
