Maybe I'm missing something, but why don't you just attach the headphones to the speaker terminals in your set? Most headphones have an impedance high enough to essentially be ignored by the loudspeaker and the power they take is miniscule. It might be too loud in your earphones, but if it is, just insert a variable resistance in series with the phones. It all depends on the impedance of your phones, but unless they are super low it should work just fine. One phone per speaker in stereo, of course. Even if they are low impedance phones, they are probably so sensitive you will need a series resistance to reduce the volume and that will make them look like a high impedance to he speaker.
