I've listened to FM most of my life, and I've owned some nice tuners. The better Pioneer, Kenwood and Marantz receivers from the 70's have nice built in tuners that can be used as a separate tuner, and they're not hard to find or expensive. However, the biggest single thing you can do to help a tuner is a good antenna. I used an outdoor dipole for many years, about 25 feet high, turning it for best alignment. About four months ago I stumbled onto a BIC Beam Box. This is a little box with three controls on the front, and is un-powered. It has a built in antenna with a switch that changes it's directionality. A knob tunes out un-wanted noise, while a switch changes from narrow band to wide band. This gadget really works! It outperforms my outdoor dipole antenna while sitting on my equipment rack only six feet off the floor. I'd recommend this indoor antenna for anyone who don't want to mess with an outdoor yagi type antenna.
