The song, Maggie Lauder, is a classic Scottish ballad, and a more or less true story. The piper mentioned is Rob the Ranter, a famous traveling piper who was the best known in Scotland in (if I remember correctly) the 16th century. Maggie Lauder was a well known dancer of the time period. Whether or not they ever actually met is open for debate, but it makes a good story.
