Some people do this to their sick/old animals (or pay the vet).
And many, many people exist without a brain...
Anecdotal "evidence" - son of one friend of mine was badly hurted in the car accident a few months ago. He was in the coma for a few weeks and then he slowly "waked up"...He is still in hospital, little better, can even talk a little. His dad ignored his job and he`s always with his son. Maybe his son would never recover, he was student, but now... But, his father love him even more. And nothing would change it. What`s suffering, illness, death - against the love?
Nothing - and I mean it.
