Thats a complete mis-interpretation of Lao-tse and his philosophy as well as Bhuddas philosophy.
Lao-tse believed that the world is illusion and all we see is manufactured in our minds.
Read the Tao tse tung; "Form is emptiness". "Emptiness is form."
He absolutely did not believe man could become one with god; because man and god are the same. You cant become one with yourself. No duality;no discrimination.
That example is a poor understanding of the text.
