Ok, here goes. As you read on you will realize I'm not well versed in this so bear with me

Altec Lansing 846A & B Valencias

The difference between the 846A (which I have) and the B is the impedience was changed from 16 ohms to 8 and a vent tube was added to the B in place of the venting around the sides of the horn in the A model. The B is said to sound better than the A. I've never heard a set of B's so I don't know.

The horns are the 811b horns and my 846A's have the 806-A drivers. The horns are 90 degrees horizontal & 40 degree vertical dispersion. I've added dampening material to mine to stop the ringing that you sometimes get on the aluminium horn. The 811 has it's crossover @ 800Hz.

The FR is listed @ 40-20K and the woofers are 15" 416-A. Mine sit on the floor as I dislike stands. No matter how much they improve the sound. You know, don't confuse me with the facts The horn C/L is about 24" off the floor which is plenty for nearfield (8') or even better in a large room. To me the horn manages to disperse the sound well enough that I never hear the sound as below my ears. Or maybe I'm used to them. You probably need someone who is good at critiquing speakers listen to a pair to get the straight scoop.

The dimensions are
H-29 1/2"
W-26"
D-16 1/2"
W-86lbs.

The thing that keeps me hooked on them is the complete sound they offer to me. If it's colored so be it. It's pretty close to what live music sounds like to me. The midrange is what they're known for. They will quickly tell you where the weak link is in your system. Right now mine is the CD player and TT.

Hopefully I have helped some Duke. If you have more questions and get anything from the answers then ask away I love music and this hobby but it's not life & death to me. I learned the hard way long ago not to invest much ego in it
