I exchanged e-mails with an engineer who has no vested interest in the project (he works for another company), and he said back EMF would not be an issue. But his answer didn't go into any detail.
So I called a friend of mine in the industry who's been building tube amps for thirty years or so, and asked him. He said that there would be no core coupling between the two voice coils, and the one coil generating back EMF into the other wouldn't be an issue. I asked him if the pole piece would act as a core, and he said no way - for one thing it would be magnetically saturated already. He said he'd like to hear what comes of the project.
I'm not engineer enough to know for sure that there won't be issues, but I'll know more once I've spent some time with the prototypes.
