What's critical is the distance between the radiating planes of the individual elements, which ideally is kept under a wavelength. This rules out 1" domes that have 2" wide mounting flanges but other options are available. A simple rule of thumb states that if the radiating plane of the array comprises are least 90% of the meaured vertical plane then you're OK. Where horns are concerned the radiating area is the horn mouth, exclusive of the mounting flange.
