Nothing fancy. Removing the dust cap does lower the high peak without a 1st order coil in the signal path. The plug makes the sound clearer. I was listening this way for a few months. I have a coil at 3.3khz now. Last week I removed the plugs and the sound was not as clear. They are back in now.
1) cut the cap off with a knife
2) cut dowels .75" dia x 3" long on a table saw
I thought that the length would let the wave stabelize before the collapse at the end of the dowel. You may be able to make them shorter with a cone taper like the Audex ones. A lathe would help.
3) remove the burrs
4) place 3 small balls of rope caulk on the end of the dowel and press in place
