I probably will not be able to get 16 drivers and the costs would also be a factor. I appreciate that a larger number would get me more low down response but from my experience with the Tact subs, single 12" Peerless woofers and the 15" P-Audio, I think that 4 Peerless drivers per side would be ok in my setup.
Your point about opposing woofers to reduce cabinet distortion is valid - this is how the Tact W210 is designed. That led to my idea about two drivers per opposing sides to reduce distortion. Having all the drivers at floor level may also be beneficial in exciting all room modes maximally, these then being corrected by RCS.
