The quick disconnects are designed to be attached to the wires using a crimping too. Another option would be to solder the wires directly to the speaker terminals, but I prefer to use the quick disconnects at least until I'm certain I will not be pulling the speakers.
If you want to upgrade the internal wiring, 12 ga Belden 5000UE cable is available from Blue Jeans cable for 38 cents/ft. It's a neutral sounding high purity copper. You will have to strip off the outer cover, but there's a "zip cord" inside that makes it very easy.
