I was a stagehand and aspiring soundman years ago (70s & 80s)and observed the virtual abandonment of passive crossovers in favor of active crossovers. When I re-entered the music biz in the 21st century, I was surprised to see most people using 'hybrid' systems, i.e. subs and low mids being fed from active crossovers and 'tops' using passive crossovers. The reasons I assumed for the switch to active crossovers way back when were power loss issues and distortion/phase issues inherent in passives. I logically concluded, upon seeing the proliferation of these 'hybrid' systems, that these issues are relatively unimportant at higher frequencies or that the power loss issues are less relevant in low energy spectrums. Does anyone know of any tech papers/data supporting this trend (other than mfrs marketing BS)?
