What type of sound distortion, as they can have different causes. Is it stuttering, cutting in and out, or has it lost bass or treble? To make sure it isn't your speaker hardware, try plugging in external speakers and see if the sound clears up.

You raise a very important point. I remember a time when my laptop had such a problem. It couldn't produce any kind of sound even after connecting it to an external speaker. I had it to take for repair since it was still under warranty.
