I'm listening to one right now. Unbelievable. 90dB S/N. The best illusion of instruments playing in a space I've ever heard.
Up to this level there's pros and cons for any pre-amp you can name but once you reach here, this is one of the few.
Which, BTW, validates the Simple 45 amp design big time.

Man, that's a clean amp. One of the main things that bothers me about many SET amps is their hum. Not all have it, but many do. It's a deal-breaker for me. Your SL-1 is whisper clean. I like it!

Went back to it's owner last Friday.

However, today the replacement showed up, and it's MINE!

Mine's black.

It's even quieter than the CAT. In fact, no hum at all. A hybrid, after all.

Frequency response ± .5dB, 5 Hz to 50 kHz
Distortion (THD) < .01%
Noise & hum 100 dB below 1V RMS output

Not the "magical" sound of the CAT but excellent nonetheless.

Happy again.

BTW, it's a teen-aged SL-1 I picked up on Audiogon for $499!

Came with an Amperex 7308 (6922 variant) which I find is held in the same regard as the CCA.

The Marantz 8001 SACD player through the direct inputs is really incredible.
