When purchasing a new home theater, is it okay to test it at the point of purchase? I always try to avoid a situation where you have purchased an item, then it starts malfunctioning even before being used. What else should be considered?

If the shop will let you, I don't see a problem with that. They should have a demo version available so you can get an idea of what you are buying and what it can do. If you are buying online, all I can say is make sure there's a good return policy!
