I just got a strange idea. Do you know how they can sync laser lights to music and get things like the Pink Floyd light show? Do you think there could be a way to downsize that idea so you could do that with a record on a turntable? Like somewhere between a Floyd light show and a lava lamp that moves to the beat of the music?

You can actually do it with anything that generates a signal. Just use a processor to look for certain things and feed the output to a controller. It can get quite sophisticated.

In my youth, I used to connect the right and left channels to a two-channel oscilloscope and set it to display Lissajous patterns. Sometimes I still do.

Doing this, one channel drives the trace left and right and the other channel drives it up and down. Makes an interesting display, and is the same method used in many laser light shows.
