Why does the whine of a mosquito put us so on edge? Is it the actual sound, or is it what hearing a nearby mosquito portends?

I hear this a lot since I seem to be a mosquito magnet while everyone else is just fine.

I think it's a combination. It seems like mosquito whines are in a particularly irritating frequency range and any time you have a mosquito right next to you, you get paranoid about bites.

Apparently the whining of mosquitoes reaches a frequency of up to 1200 hertz when they are courting each other. Normally a female's wing-beat produces a frequency of 400 hertz, and a male's frequency is 600 hertz. While courting, this whining increases significantly and the combined frequency is a staggering 1200 hertz. Laughing
