Exactly what does it mean when a song is "remastered"? How does this improve the quality of the song? And why is it so hard to find the original version after the remastered version is released?

Remastered in the case of a movie means that an old source has been digitally cleaned up, so it's quality has been raised. I'm guessing it's the same for music to, in which case it doesn't make sense to have a lower quality product when at the same price point a better version exists.
