Hi guys, could any of you experts help me design a "sub-woofer" system for my car. I have some special wishes:

1. I don't want to buy a seperate amp, I want to drive them with my existing 4x35 watts Sony Radio/MD player.

2. In the front doors I have a two-way system (with a crossover) that sound good. I just need some more bass, so I'd figure I put some subwoofers in the back

3. My car is a station car. I want to put two small(ish) cabs in the trunk, preferably in the corners, so that I can have some corner-loading.

4. I think I want only sounds below 100 Hz coming from behind, for proper integration. So: a simple low pass filter will do, ain't it?

5. Maybe a design with some horn loading could work, to increase efficiency. Billfitzmaurice's Autotuba is too big for me, however.

Any ideas? I'm open to all suggestions. Also, links to relevant plans are welcome!

My experience with car subs in the back: any crossover above 80hz and less than 18db/octave becomes annoying. A passive filter in line with the speakers that will do this will be large and expensive. I suggest listening to a setup that has a variable electronic crossover to see how you feel first.

HL10A in 0.35 to 1.0 cuft [message #47812 is a reply to message #47810] Tue, 27 September 2005 10:41 Go to previous messageGo to next message

I'd go with an Eminence HL10A in a 1.0ft3 box tuned to 30Hz. That will generate strong output to 30Hz. If you need a smaller cabinet, the HL10A can be used in cabinets as small as 0.35ft3. In a small 0.35ft3 cabinet, tune to 40Hz for f3 of 50Hz. You could also make a cabinet sized somewhere in between, say 0.5ft3 tuned to 40Hz (f3 = 40Hz) or 0.75ft3 tuned to 35Hz (f3 = 35Hz).

Thanks. The price of a passive filters is indeed important, and thanks for the 80 Hz max. suggestion.
