Double Driver Bass Horn Question [message #45927]

Being intrigued by your 12Pi and 15Pi concept discussions, I've been
driven to ask if a couple of Eminence Alpha 10's might work in this
configuration with back wave BR tuning as in the Studio 2 PI or 2 Pi
Tower volumes/ports? This would hopefully work with a midhorn/2002 for
fairly high performance, relatively low cost, music system. It seems
like you have the crossovers on the shelf. I would think that the
benefits of your 2 driver configuration would do more for drivers with
a bit more distortion that it would for pricier, cleaner drivers.
Any thoughts?

I like the idea of π cornerhorns using this push-pull configuration. For one thing, the area between the drivers is constrained, so the coupling between them is good. This will improve the distortion reduction mechanism. And for another thing, the drivers are not visible so the exposed magnet is not ugly.

For your specific example, I think a pair of push-pull Alpha 10's in 3ft3 to 10ft3 tuned to 40Hz will sound very nice. If you have corners, make them π cornerhorns. If not, just use a traditional bass-reflex box. That's a couple of excellent systems that wouldn't cost much to build.

I'm not sure that there are corners with enough clear space in
the room in which I would use these. Could the W-horn configuration
you discussed for the Lab 12's work with the Alpha 10's, with
adjustment?

Sure, you could build a folded horn for them. I've not modeled them in a folded horn, so I'm not sure how they'll perform. But they are surprisingly good in the eight π, which uses Alpha 10's mounted on a midhorn with the rear chamber vented to extend response down to 35Hz.

A box 24" wide, 18" deep and 36" tall would be a little under 9 cu. ft.
You could divide it verticaly with a front-to-rear septum with a bit of
sturcture to mount the push pull drivers on the divider toward the
top middle (looking from the front). The drivers would radiate forward
through a vertical slot. Each of the BR chambers would be isolated and
ports could be on the back. The width would match the mid-horn sitting
on top. Could be fun.
