If one is going to power taper, AND if one wishes to tinker with the tapering, wouldn't putting some l-pads into the groups make it easier to do the adjustment? Or am I introducing an element into the circumstance that I don't want to do?

Ths issue is that if you insert an L-pad in one or more of the woofer legs what you are doing is inserting more series resistance in the circuit. Effectively, you are changing the box tuning so you'll impact the bass extension of the woofers. If you do insert series resistance into the woofer leg, I would take another look at the box tuning impact before finalizing your design.
