You may be interested in the document called "Improvements in Monitor Loudspeaker Systems," published in volume 31, number 6 of the AES Journal. The authors are David Smith, D. B. Keele and John Eargle and is an excellent and informative paper. Most notable are the discussions of frequency division between components, passive compensation networks for compression horn tweeters, positions in space where phase response is true and off-axis angular positions where it becomes destructive and causes frequency anamolies.
